DenUM/USC Giving Circle
USC and DenUM strive to serve people living in poverty while equipping young leaders with strategies to make a difference!Join Code: dusc
Seven years ago I moved to Denver and my life was changed forever! I came to volunteer at Urban Servant Corps (USC) which provided me a place to live in an intentional community with other young adults. I was given the opportunity to volunteer full time at Denver Urban Ministries (DenUM) who serves thousands of homeless people in Denver each year. I lived in intentional community with 18 young adults. We earned only $75 per month and worked full time at a wide variety of social service agencies. At DenUM, I organized educational and service events that shared the realities of poverty with teenagers from across the country. Surprisingly, this year was the greatest and most transformative year of my life!
Since my year of volunteering at DenUM and living in community at USC, I look closely at the social issues in our society. Both of these agencies challenged me to look at overwhelming complex social issues and know that I can choose to make a difference in my daily life. Based upon my year of volunteering, I have committed to teach elementary school in north Aurora. I now teach many of the families DenUM and USC serve. In my school building, I try to be an advocate for families that are living in poverty, struggle with immigration and incarceration. DenUM and USC gave me a "real life education" that completed my preparation to be a teacher.
My story is not unique, USC and DenUM have collaborated together for years and influenced many other lives. It is my wish that ALL USC/DenUM volunteers will join me in saying thanks to two agencies that gave us a "real life education". My giving circle is one way that you can say thanks by making a pledge to give financial support to both DenUM and USC at the same time. Please join me in saying THANK YOU!
