1987 A committee of Arapahoe Medical Society physicians gathered to address the growing issue of the uninsured and lack of medical care. The committee agreed that if many physicians agreed to care for these patients, the burden of care would be lessened.

1988 Committee leader Gary VanderArk, MD founded Doctors Care and successfully signed up all 129 physicians of the Arapahoe Medical Society. By opening its door on Valentine’s Day, Doctors Care opened its heart to the uninsured desperate for medical care.

El Centro Su Teatro

Su Teatro began in 1971. Sparked by the nationwide Chicano Civil Rights Movement, the original company used art and culture to build community by reacquainting young Chicanos with their history. Su Teatro was created because of a need. Mexican Americans had been denied access to their history, language and culture. Teatro allowed individuals to reconnect with a positive source
of self-identity.

In 2007, Su Teatro celebrates its thirty fifth anniversary, and is teaching a new generation of cultural activists to connect with their communities through the arts.

Ellicott Wildlife Rehabilitation Center

Founded by rehabbers who felt they could do a better job caring for animals by sharing knowledge, experience, and facilities. We moved from Littleton, Colorado to Ellicott so we would have space to properly care for animals. Organized and incorporated in May 2002 and received IRS nonprofit status in May 2003. Outdoor facilities have been steadily growing, despite financial constraints, due to sheer need of animal placement.

Empowerment Program

The Empowerment Program opened its doors in 1986 in response to a growing number of homeless women, women living in poverty, sex workers, and women involved in the criminal justice system. Throughout the past twenty-one years, Empowerment has continued it?s efforts to decrease the number of women living in poverty who have significant barriers to self-sufficiency due to involvement in the criminal justice system, substance abuse and violence, by providing onsite education, employment training, counseling, supportive services and long-term follow-up support services.

KVNF is a noncommercial, community-oriented public radio station that officially broadcast for the first time in October 1979, bringing public radio to the North Fork Valley.
