Hibernation begins!
With the weather turning cooler this week, we have been on hibernation watch. In the next few days, we'll pack away more than 35 box turtles and desert tortoises. Most of the turtles will be refrigerated for hibernation while larger animals are packed in specially designed hibernacula and store in a cold room. Our Hibernation Guide http://www.corhs.org/CoRHS_Box_Turtle_Hibernation_Guide_08.pdf explains the process and why it is so important to the health of these animals.
We have many tortoises who do not hibernate: Sulcatas, one of whom is ramming my desk chair as I write this blog, Greeks, a Leopard tortoise, and a red foot tortoise. working with reptiles is a travel adventure every day -- our turtles and tortoises are from North and South America, the African Continent, and the Iberian Penisula.
